New Yorker Festival: James Surowiecki vs. The New Pornographers, Oct 7

From memory, some notes from the interview / performance Saturday evening. James Surowiecki (author of "The Wisdom of Crowds") was the interviewer.

--

Dan Bejar ("Destroyer") was not present.

--

First question. JS: "Why are you called 'The New Pornographers'?"
Carl Newman: "What an awful question!"

--

There have been a number of explanations given regarding the origin of the name. For this particular evening, Newman offered up one of his common ones: someone told them that Jerry Falwell had written a book called "Music: the New Pornography". Whether this is true, or if the book actually exists, is unknown to the band.

--

Kathryn Calder is Carl Newman's long lost niece (I was not aware of this).

--

On Kathryn Calder's YAMAHA keyboard, the letters "M" and "H" are scratched off (or taped over) so that it reads "YA A A".

--

You can probably find a setlist elsewhere on the internets. What do I look like, a professional?

This is beautiful and more than makes up for the shenanigans from the other night. I am very jealous you went to this. Are you going to see Joanna Newson? If so, you need to live blog it (I don't even know what that means but thought it would be fun to throw it out there).

Oh, I also wanted to say that I saw this on my Netvibes news reader, clicked the link and thought, 'Why the hell is it opening up Today's Tune?' I never would have expected something so high brow to be coming from this site.

If, by "shenanigans" you are referring to the super-delayed multiple Ben Folds posts, that was apparently a youtube glitch and not me, dammit!

As soon as I saw it I deleted it.

And, disagreement doesn't bother me, but I am not a fan of rules. Anyway, that's history

Regarding Joanna Newsom, I am pretty sure she was interviewing / performing at that same time, different location that night.

This is the first New Yorker Festival I went to, ever. $$$$
